There were four batches of "Special Type" destroyers, Type I, IA, II, and III, and the Akatsuki which was completed in 1932 as the lead Type III ship. Distinctive features of the Type III ships such as the narrowwer fore funnel and larger bridge have been accurately reproduced. Though she played an active part in many actions from the Aleutians to Guadalcanal, where she was finally sunk during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, this model depicts the ship when she was first launched.
